Richard's Riff Raff
Saucy Schimenti

*In the coming New Year, 2012, both Groundhog Day and the State of the
Union address will occur on the same day.**

This is an ironic juxtaposition of events.

One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to an insignificant
creature of little intelligence for prognostication

The other involves a groundhog.*

Our Mission

The Haversack Herald website continues the 25 year tradition of the printed version to help support and foster the Civil War reenacting community in the Midwest.

On our Units page we offer free links and contact information to local reenacting groups and units.  If you would like us to list yours, please submit your information to the editor.

We cordially invite event and host units that sponsor Civil War weekends, living histories, and dances etc. to have their events listed on this site.

A standard word listing of your event is provided free of charge.    However, if you so desire an event listing in color, with graphics and picture and/or a link to your web page, a nominal fee would be charged.  We can also load informational documents and registration forms for the public and reenactors.

Lake Villa Event - Shutting Down
From: lake-villa-civil-war-days-committee

To All Of You Who Have Served On The Lake Villa Civil War Days
Committee,

By now I have relayed the news to each of you that the Lake Villa
Historical Society Board of Directors has determined that the 9th
Annual Lake Villa Civil War Days event was the final one for Lake
Villa.  While Civil War reenactors are hardy and will endure any
weather conditions, the public is not as forgiving.  We have to depend
on them for our profit margin.  Our expenses still have to be paid
rain or shine.  That also means setting aside enough money before an
event to pay expenses regardless of potential income.  The expense of
hosting this event continues to increase each year.  We can no longer
financially support it.

We will try to get the official thank you  out to this year's
participants as soon as possible and include an official notification
regarding the discontinuation of this event.

Best wishes to each of you as you continue to share your hobby and
enlighten the public on the history of the Civil War.

Sincerely,

Sue and the LVHS Board of Directors

LtRich

After 25 years of publication, the Haversack is shutting down the presses and ceasing publication.  I have enjoyed the past years and regret having this come to an end.  My thanks to those who have supported me in the past.

See you on the field, and be safe out there

The Haversack will continue as an on-line version as best as the team of Martin & Hargreaves can do.

Saucy Schimenti returns and offers us some historical  perspective, trivia and other little known facts.
